Data Domain Statistics (DDS) Web Service The NFIS Data Domain
Statistics (DDS) Web service consists of a Web-based user
interface permitting the selection of a layer attribute set
for which a statistical summary report will be generated.
Statistics are generated for an attribute depend on data type and include:
- Numeric - max, min, mean, mode, median, standard deviation,
frequency distribution (maximum of 20 classes)
- Character - number of unique occurrences (sorted by descending occurrence)
    unique value list (sorted alphabetically)
frequency distribution (maximum of 20 classes)
Currently, DDS is integrated into the Area of Interest Web
service. Two examples of the Area of Interest web service are
available on the Project Demonstrations page.
Instructions for using the Area of Interest and DDS are
available at the Chameleon Help page.
For more information
about the DDS please view our online documentation.

which include the scheduled projects and actions. Both the present version
as well as archived versions are available.
NFIS Access User Guide
DACS is suite of applications and an Apache module that
provides an authentication and role provision capability for
the Canadian Forest Service Network (CFSNet).
Using
industry-standard SSL communication to ensure information
remains private and secure, DACS will provide CFSNet with a
security protocol that is dependable and maintainable.
After a user has authenticated with DACS, they can access
any resource they have permission to see in the CFSNet
without having to re-authenticate. DACS is a general-purpose,
distributed system that combines Single Sign-On capability
and role-based access control for Web services. DACS allows
CFSNet administrators from each center to flexibly control
access to both Web pages and applications that are provided
by CFSNet Web servers. Administrators may control access on
a per user basis, or by groups of individuals. An existing
authenticating system may easily integrate with DACS. For
example, if users already use an authentication system
(such as logging into an e-mail client), DACS can be
integrated with this authentication protocol to provide
access to those users.
The National Forest Information
System (NFIS) has developed a Web-based authentication
interface, NFIS Access, which leverages the functionality
of DACS for authentication.By specifying rules for Web
services, a DACS administrator can grant unrestricted
access to Web services to some users, limited kinds of
access to other users, and completely deny access to yet
another set of users. User passwords, lists of user accounts,
and other potentially sensitive information are not
maintained by DACS. Each CFSNet center will control access
to its own resources.
The National Afforestation Inventory (NAI) is an
internet-based reporting system that can gather information
about afforestation in Canada and provide it to the National
Forest Carbon Monitoring, Accounting and Reporting System.
The NAI application will allow the Canadian Forest Service
(CFS) to exchange information on afforestation with
afforestation practitioners over the internet. Managers of
afforestation projects will be able to access and download
related information such as carbon estimation and reporting
protocols and specifications of information requirements from
the NAI web site. They will also be able to provide
information about their projects to the CFS using forms
accessible through a web browser.
The Canadian Council of Forest Ministers (CCFM), a partnership between the federal,
provincial and territorial governments, founded the "National Forestry
Database Program (NFDP)" in 1990.
Its objectives are to establish a comprehensive
national forestry database in order to:
- describe forest management and its impact on the forest resource;
- develop a public information program; and
- provide forestry information to the federal, provincial and territorial policy processes.
The National Forestry Information System (NFIS), in conjunction with Canadian
Forestry Services (CFS), developed and maintains the National Forestry Database (NFD).
Direction to enhance the database and to improve methods of reporting
national forestry statistics is provided by NFIS and a Steering Committee.
The Steering Committee is composed of a representative from each provincial
and territorial forest management agency and reports to the CCFM through
the deputy ministers responsible for forestry.
The NFD is the central database used to compile the national forestry statistics.
The database represents statistical forest data in any period, marks changes in
the data and tracks differences in the resource itself on an on-going basis.
Most of the provincial and territorial data appearing in the NFD are provided
by the provincial or territorial resource management organizations. The CFS
inputs information for federal lands from data provided by the responsible
federal departments.
The Metadata tool gives you the option to perform three tasks:
- Create Single Metadata File
When valid data is entered into a template file, a valid metadata
file will be returned to the user. This file can be saved to
an appropriate location for use when submitting your
NFI plot data.
- Create Batch Templates
A batch template is an incomplete metadata file. This template can be
uploaded and used to pre-populate data fields in the metadata forms,
reducing data entry effort when creating metadata files that share
some data values. Once a batch template has been created and uploaded, an
associated batch file will be generated.
- Process Batch Templates
Multiple metadata files can be created using a batch template and a
batch file. Batch creation will eliminate the need for users to fill
out multiple text files to create multiple metadata files.
Users are encouraged to view the NFI Metadata tool overview
(presented as a Microsoft PowerPoint Presentation), and the
batch tutorial.
The Metadata
Specifications Document should be read before using the Metadata Tool.
The NFI Metadata Tool was a joint development between NFIS and the National
Afforestation Inventory program.
The File Storage System (FSS) stores files in a database and provides basic file management operations using HTTP(S).
Some of the services available are:
- Insert File - insert a file into the database
- Update File - updated a file that is already in the database
- Retrieve File - retrieve a file from the database
- Delete File - delete a file froim the database
- Update Comment - update a database file's comment field
- File List - get a listing of database files
If you wish to have access to the FSS, or would like more information, please contact us
